Key Features of the 13-Player Code

The Six-Tackle Limit

The attacking team has six tackles to cross the try line. On the fifth tackle, teams almost always kick downfield to gain territory or launch high aerial "bombs" to contest possession. If the sixth tackle is completed without a kick or score, possession is turned over to the opposing side on the spot.

Rapid Play-the-Ball

Without rucks or mauls to slow down play, the tackled ball-carrier must stand up and roll the ball backward with their foot to the dummy-half. Meanwhile, the defending defensive line must immediately retreat 10 meters, keeping the tempo exceptionally high throughout the match.

The Historic Split & FAQ

The George Hotel Split of 1895

On August 29, 1895, representatives from 21 northern English clubs met at the George Hotel in Huddersfield and voted to break away from the Rugby Football Union (RFU). Working-class factory workers and coal miners were losing wages to play rugby on weekends. When the RFU refused to allow "broken-time payments" to compensate them for missed work, the Northern Union (later Rugby League) was born.

What is the difference in scoring between League and Union?

In Rugby League, a try is worth 4 points (compared to 5 in Union), a conversion is 2 points, a penalty goal is 2 points (compared to 3 in Union), and a standard drop goal during open play is worth 1 point (or 2 points if kicked from beyond the 40-meter line in the NRL).
